- Are we going to talk about the fact that Joan has discussed that conversation with him?

We know she was angry and kept it all bottled up in the restaurant but when she finally got back to Sherlock she must have let lose about what Moriarty said. I’m guessing we caught the end of it in Gregson’s office.

I think she was especially mad about being called a mascot; that’s why he picks up on it in his confrontation with Moriarty, because it upset Joan the most, so he takes the thing that hurt her and throws it back in Moriarty’s face to prove Joan’s power, to use the insult as a tool of Joan’s power.

In writing everything is done with a purpose; there are no accidents. “The Mascot.” is it’s own sentence to truely emphasise Joan’s place in this world, because if you’ve made it through 24 episodes and still think Joan Watson is a sidekick, this scene proves you very much wrong.

This one line takes Sherlock and Joan’s equality and brands it into the very heart of the show: In Elementary, there’s no such thing as a sidekick.

something personal

i rarely post personal stuff anymore, and i’m not on tumblr as regularly as i used to be, and will anyone read this? i have lost quite a few followers, and i haven’t talked to some of you in a while (though it always makes me smile when i see you on my dash). but i need to write this.

it’s been a weird week. last wednesday i had surgery to remove both my bottom wisdom teeth, and even though the procedure itself didn’t hurt at all, my jaw did hurt a lot and every day i guess it hits a reflex and i get a constant headache. and i couldn’t eat anything but cold soup for five or six days, and even now i can’t chew stuff other than pasta and the like. while this is very annoying, it isn’t the main event of the week. the important thing is that since last sunday, the 12th of may, it’s been a year since my mom died.

i honestly couldn’t tell how the time passed. in my head it seems so recent, of course because i very clearly remember every moment of the last day of her life, and the funeral. i remember all this, and yet sometimes i struggle to remember the sound of her voice, or how she used to walk around the house. memories seem elusive, a little blurry, a little vague, like it’s hard to remember specifics. she was only sick for six months, but it cast a shadow on my memories from the previous 25 years i knew her. but i very clearly remember her scent, or how her cheek felt when i kissed it. and her eyes.

my dad and my sister and i are doing okay, as a whole. we got used to being just the three of us, and we found our ways to laugh and to do things together. but my dad spends all day alone until my sister and i come back from work, and i know nothing can ever replace my mom or help him through his day, because for 30 years he did everything with her. for the last year he’s been sleeping in a bed in the living room; he doesn’t want to go sleep in his bedroom because in that bed my mom spent her illness and the last few months of her life as she got progressively worse (she didn’t die in the bed though, she died at the hospital where we took her bc of respiratory issues). lately he’s been talking about how he’s getting old and that he’s at a dangerous age (he’s 70) and it makes me sad and worried that he feels it’s all over for him. i want him to be okay and to smile and to live life as best as he can. i want to tell him this is what mom would have wanted but it probably doesn’t matter to him when she isn’t here to tell him.

today i got back from working a shitty 12-hour day at the office, and there was, at the entrance of our building, a funeral paper. out of the fucking blue, in an abrupt and unfair way, my neighbor from upstairs died of a heart attack. he had a wife, and two kids under 14 years old. the kids were adopted. he and his wife tried to have children through IVF, and at one moment she was pregnant with twins but misscarried. not long afterwards, they adopted two kids, brother and sister, from an orphanage. the kids were already 5 and 7 years old. they had been abandoned by their shitty family and they weren’t babies anymore - babies get adopted so much more. the kids that are old enough to remember being abused and abandoned, sometimes they just get… left there. but this couple got the boy and the girl together and gave them a home and they always seemed so happy to have one.

my mom used to tell me that as they parked their car, she’d often see, from our balcony, the kids being so affectionate with their parents and loudly, happily saying i love you my mommy, i love you my daddy. it brought my mom to tears to witness that scene of unconditional love. she thought it was because they appreciated so much the chance to be loved, to have a home, when they probably felt so alone at the orphanage. it must be a dream to them, my mom said. but now my mom is dead. and their father is dead too, and he was the kindest man, with the most gentle demeanor and smiling eyes. he and his family, all four of them, came to my mom’s funeral, almost exactly a year ago. he gave me a hug and told me my mom was a good person. i thanked him. his children also hugged me. they are good kids. he raised them, for a few years, to be good.
